Ionising radiation

Home » Glossary » Ionising radiation

Ionising radiation consists of particles or electromagnetic waves that have enough energy to separate electrons from atoms or molecules. This process can cause biological damage. Examples of ionising radiation are X-rays, gamma rays and certain types of particle radiation. Ionising radiation can have negative effects on health depending on the dose and duration of exposure. It is therefore important to protect yourself from ionising radiation and to keep radiation exposure as low as possible.
