In vitro study

Home » Glossary » In vitro study

An in vitro study is a scientific study conducted in an artificial environment, usually in a laboratory. In vitro studies are used to investigate the effects of substances, procedures or conditions on cells, tissues or organs that have been isolated outside the body. In contrast to in vivo studies, which are conducted on living organisms, in vitro studies allow the conditions to be precisely controlled and the results accurately measured. In vitro studies can be used in various fields such as medicine, biology and pharmacology and are often an important step in the development of new drugs or treatments. In vitro studies are studies conducted outside a living organism, for example in a test tube, and therefore in an artificial environment. The knowledge gained from this cannot simply be transferred to the processes in a living organism.
